More and more technologies are being developed in an effort to make surgeries as minimally invasive as possible. Hysterectomy is no different. The Da Vinci surgery veers away from the conventional techniques of performing a hysterectomy.
Serious problems involving a woman’s reproductive system are often treated with a hysterectomy surgery. These problems can include cancer, endometriosis, fibroids, severe cramps, and abnormal bleeding among others.
Hysterectomy is a procedure where the uterus is removed either through the abdomen or the vagina. When the patient’s condition calls for it, other reproductive organs may also be removed, including the cervix, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. When performing the hysterectomy through the vagina, a laparoscope may be used to allow the doctor to look into the abdomen while making smaller incisions on the vagina.

In addition, a vaginal hysterectomy would cause less bleeding and pose fewer complications. The scars incurred from this surgery would also be less visible. Even the use of a laparoscope in a vaginal hysterectomy yields better results than an abdominal hysterectomy. However, the use of a laparoscope may not really be an improvement over the standard way of performing a vaginal hysterectomy, since a laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy requires longer operating and recovery times. This procedure would also be more expensive.

Being minimally invasive, the incisions made in a Da Vinci surgery are only one to two centimeters. It still allows the surgeon to clearly see the insides of a patient’s abdomen, though, so this procedure can be performed even in more complicated conditions.

Da Vinci Surgery- How is It Performed?
Performing a Da Vinci surgery involves the use of the Da Vinci System. This system is comprised of the following:
* EndoWrist instruments
* Vision system
* Patient cart on which are four interactive robotic arms
* Surgeon’s console
The robotic arms on the patient cart are inside the patient’s abdomen and are used by the surgeon to operate on the patient. These robotic arms consist of two or three instrument arms and one endoscope arm.
A team of medical staff is involved in a Da Vinci surgery. While the surgeon performs the operation, the others in the team ensure that the port is prepared, that the right instruments are installed, and that the laparoscopic arms in use are supervised.
