The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the metabolic rate. If the thyroid gland is under active then it cannot produce sufficient levels of thyroid hormones. When the levels of these hormones are too low, the metabolism will work at a rate that is slower than normal. This condition is known as hypothyroidism and it can result in a wide range of different symptoms. Common symptoms of hypothyroidism are fatigue, dry skin, depression and weight gain.
