Maintaining A Healthy Thyroid Encourages Healthy Weight
Approximately fifty million people suffer from an underactive thyroid. Some of the symptoms associated with hypothyroidism are gaining weight or difficulty losing weight; include fatigue, low sex drive, feeling cold and hair loss. The brain’s hypothalamus regulates the body temperature, heart rate, hunger, stress response, fat melting and storage, reproductive behavior, bone growth and blood sugar levels. Sometimes doctors often think these symptoms are due to stress, depression, PMS, not enough exercise, and aging. Your doctor will perform a simple test to determine if your problems could be from hypothyroidism.
It is sometimes hard for people with an under-active thyroid to lose pounds. Hypothyroidism slows the metabolism causing the endocrine system to change which makes it difficult to lose pounds. Nearly all overweight and obese patients treated have a metabolic and endocrine dysfunction which contributes to weight gain. An evaluation to correct the imbalance of two key hormones; Leptin and reverse T3 (rT3), may help these patients to lose weight.

Leptin is a hormone that is a major regulator of body weight and metabolism. Fat cells secrete Leptin which increases the fat accumulation. When Leptin secretion increases with increased weight, the hypothalamus is signaled that there is enough fat (energy) stored. The body is stimulated to burn fat instead of continuing to store excess fat. This stimulates the thyroid releasing hormone (TRH) as well as the production of hormones.
The resting metabolic rate (RMR) of people has been checked for those with elevated Leptin levels. Those indicating Leptin resistance have RMRs that are consistently below normal so they burn five hundred to six hundred calories less each day than someone of equal body mass. For these patients to lose weight, they have to reduce calories by five hundred to six hundred calories a day and exercise for an hour or two a day (just to keep from gaining weight) to normalize their metabolism.
There are easy ways to balance Leptin and drop pounds. One study shows that exercising and fish oil supplements can help the body to become sensitive to Leptin. Fish oil returns essential omega-3 fatty acids to the body. Any amount of exercise (as little as twelve minutes a day) helps with leptin resistance. High fructose corn syrup is one of the main ingredients causing Leptin and insulin resistance. This ingredient tells the brain to eat more and to build more fat. For this reason, it is not a good idea to drink beverages like soda that contain high fructose corn syrup.
People often leave a doctor’s office with an anti-depressant prescription instead of being referred for tests. Women are seven times more likely than men to develop problems and have a one in five chance of developing a problem during their life. Heart disease, diabetes and obesity (often resulting from undiagnosed, untreated hypothyroidism) are at all time highs.
Treatments for hypothyroid may focus on the elevated Leptin (Leptin resistance). If Leptin is elevated, there are reduced tissue levels. Just about all diabetics are Leptin resistant. T4-to-T3 conversion in diabetics is often reduced by fifty percent without an increase in TRH. This is why it is very difficult for type II diabetics to lose weight. Because of poor T4-to-T3 conversion, the optimal treatment is a timed-released of T3. Natural desiccated thyroid (NDT) is a T4/T3 combination medication that can be used.
